'The Anemone'

A mysterious figure with a glowing body morphs into an anemone with golden tentacles. The androgynous figure intensifies the enigma in this painting by Indira Castellon. "I find myself attracted to marine life and the transformation of color, water and subtle movement," she confesses. The artist frames the painting in pinewood.

Indira Castellon

"I was born January 5, 1980, the oldest of four siblings. From the time I was a little girl, I began to draw since my mother took me to painting classes where different techniques were used. Over the years, I'd been interested in art and in painting. It was in high school that I took a class in creativity where we were taught to see that art is filled with surprises. And that art could help us know ourselves and express ourselves through it.

"The support and encouragement of my paternal grandfather was a great influence in my decision to study painting. I received a BA in visual arts from the University of Guadalajara where I had the opportunity to learn many things about painting, sculpture and printmaking. I learned from the people there and from the teachers who shared their knowledge at school and off campus in their studios.

"I liked the figure drawing classes with live models, and that is where I began to enjoy depicting the human body. With different techniques and materials, my interest in color began to grow. I became aware of all the possibilities offered by color symbology, from the most intimate to the universal.

"Today I try to put meaning into my work through a particular attribution of symbols. From the darkness to the light of colors, reflecting in this way atmospheres of fantasy where phantasmagoric visions and impossible characters inhabit parallel realities.

"I am seeking new techniques and experiences that enrich my painting and permit me to encounter my own language."
