'Half of My Body' (2002)

On a mountain peak, the silhouette of a woman stands tall, proud and filled with power. Yet she hovers in the foreground in great detail but with only half a body. The inert torso seems stitched together. Julia Salinas transmits her subject's fragility, her repressions, ties and frustrations. "This painting was inspired by a poem by Eduardo Eielson, 'Cuerpo Dividido' (Divided Body)," the artist confides. "It says '…if half my body smiles, the other...

"Hi, I'm Julia Salinas Sánchez and I was born in Yanahuara, Arequipa on January 27, 1973. My artistic formation was acquired in the Escuela Nacional de Bellas Artes del Perú in Lima. But I liked art from the time I was a little girl. I especially liked to draw and, in school, my teachers always motivated me. I wanted to study architecture. But my sister, who knew how much I liked drawing and painting, took me to see the School of Fine Arts one day. I loved it so much that I kept going back until I became a student, and now, a teacher there. For me, the atmosphere was very familiar and it captivated me. I'll forever be a prisoner of this wonderful place.

"I'd describe my works as abstract figuration. My motivation comes from the people around me, my day-to-day life. I like to communicate the problems and conflicts that arise. I've exhibited my paintings in different venues and have won several awards.

"As a teacher, preparing young people from each generation brings us different expectations. This has been the biggest challenge in my life.

"It's good to know that there are media such as the great Novica family, who give us the opportunity to share our handiwork. It shows our lives."
