'Crucifixion'

The blues and violets of penitence and the black of night lend a mystical aspect to this beautiful abstract. "This is my concept of Jesus' sacrifice based on eliminating the cross and suspending the figures in spaces of light," says artist Miguel Calderón Minchola. "The Virgin floats and only her gown links her to the earthly plane while Mary Magdalene is rooted to the earth like the stones of a cathedral.

Miguel Calderon

Miguel Calderon Minchola hails from the coastal city of Trujillo, northern Peru, and was born on October 8, 1958. He has been dedicated to painting since 1985; he is a self-taught artist who has perfected and refined his art through the years and with experience.

Calderon describes his work as impassioned. His art is motivated by a desire to understand all that surrounds him. He dedicates part of his time to painting where he attempts to explain the decay of concepts and institutions. He also teaches his art in a small workshop called "El Mundo." His work has been exhibited throughout Peru and was awarded First Place at the Feria del Libro (Lima, 2001).

Calderon considers his greatest challenge to be to provide for his family and guarantee their success. "I would like to tell Novica customers that it is essential for the arts to prevail," says Calderon. "If we lose the sense of aestheticism, we lose all."
