'Water'

Mysterious creatures materialize during an Andean ritual depicted by Lennin Vásquez. A tree represents the union between earth and sky, humankind and the spiritual realm. As villagers play music to accompany the ceremony, a petition is made to Mother Earth by placing a quintu, or three coca leaves in one's mouth. Blue as the water sought in the ceremony, tall mountains dominate the horizon.

Titled "Yacu" (Water) in Quechua.

"Hello. I'm Lennin Vásquez Concha. I was born on October 7, 1978 in Jauja in Peru's central sierra. I have always felt a need to communicate my vision of the world. This is reflected in my work, which represents an encounter with the Andean identity in which man's communion with nature is magically expressed.

"My process of elaborating a work of art results from a visual and conceptual investigation of Andean culture. These are translated into images and sketches that are then carried out on the canvas. From my first paintings, while in the National School of Fine Arts in the late 1990s, my pictorial world has passed through a contemplative magic inhabited by fantastical creatures of pre-Hispanic reminiscence. It is common to see my characters treated almost like portraits, always placed in a gloomy desert atmosphere," he says.

The artist's obvious mastery of drawing that has characterized his art has led to a new deployment of color and the inclusion of an iconography where light and its effects discover the magic of its people and rituals. It is as though a "directed" illumination suggests an unusual scenery. These are the unedited presences in his work that harmoniously occupy its space.

His works have been selected in competitions such as the Segundo Salón de Arte Joven of the Museo de Arte de la Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos (2002). In 1999, he was awarded the Medalla de Oro de Dibujo by the Nacional Superior Autónoma de Bellas Artes del Perú. Vásquez has also participated in a number of collective exhibits as well as a two-man show.
