'Totem' (2005)

Abstract in form, a human body leans backward to reveal intricate tattoos along the legs and thighs. The distant moon drifts overhead in a fiery sky while solid gray monoliths divide this fascinating canvas. Luis Ordinola evokes the ancestral adoration of fertility by way of the sun god and moon goddess. Working in icons from the Vicus and Tallan cultures, the artist depicts a totem.

Luis Ordinola

Born in Sullanero in 1978, Luis Ordinola began to paint in his third year of middle school and discovered that he liked it very much. At first he worked in pencil, chalk, and charcoal, and began to draw on the walls of his house. This led the way to a career in painting.

After finishing middle school, he happened to meet some peers from his city who studied art in Piura. Ordinola eventually applied to the School of Fine Arts there, where he learned classic techniques and began to explore some of his own. The artist says a solid background in drawing was fundamental for him, and has served him well.

"In recent years, I've had a lot of opportunities and even job offers in other fields," he say. "But fate has led me to continue in the fine arts. Painting is my life. It is the course I must follow. It is my destiny in life. I paint at all hours. Each canvas becomes a universe of ideas and forms."

Ordinola has participated in numerous collective and solo exhibits.
