'Toy'

Alone and forlorn, Teddy Bear turns his back on Jack in the Box. Oil Wantanu depicts a shadowy room where toys yearn for someone to play with them. Behind the curtain, a single light keeps vigil while a ball rolls off to itself in this poignant etching.

Oil Wantanu

"My name is Tanyaporn Wantanu, but please call me by my nickname Oil. I'm the only child so my parents and I do things together all the time because they own a tailor shop. My family is neither rich nor poor, but we are very happy.

"I've enjoyed painting ever since I was young, and my life is that of a regular girl. I like to play girls' games with friends, I like to swim and I enjoy table tennis. My life as an artist began when I was admitted to the technological institute's three-year program in fine arts. After that, I took an advanced degree at the same school and in 2005 I'll finish my Bachelor's Degree with a major in art. I chose art because I enjoy painting. It makes me feel happy.

"I'm part of a new generation with new ideas but I don't reject the good things from older generations. The culture of waii (pay respect) is good for me. Why? Because Thai culture shows respect to older people, not only for their age but also for their knowledge.

"I apply Buddha's teachings to my life. Buddha teaches us to do good things, to think good thoughts and not bother other lives. That makes my everyday life happy, not frivolous. Now that I'm a student, I will concentrate on learning in order to make my dream come true.

"Every time I start a new painting, I first plan the process and find the information I need to create the new etching. Almost all my art is based on my experiences when I was younger. It arises from my feelings when I'd stay alone. I felt lonesome and sad and used dolls and any shape in my imagination for transmitting my loneliness.

"In the future, I don't want anything to end. I want only a peaceful life, a good job and to paint until I no longer can. This is all that I want. Now a part of my dream is coming true – I can present my art for the entire world to see. Novica is a real place of art, not only for me but for every artist around the world to share their works together. Thanks to all of you who love art and support the artist. You make it possible for us to continue to create."
