Jenny Castillo

"Hi, I'm Jenny Roxana Castillo Palacios, and I was born in Cajamarca on July 27, 1986. However, I mark my birth as an artist in the studio of Tadeo Zavaleta, a Novica featured artist. I describe my art as a work that traces the passage of traditional Andean culture into modernity. My work is inspired by a happy and optimistic point of view, since I feel that Andean culture has much to offer the world.

"In 205 I became a fulltime artist, because I love to let my paintbrush glide through the canvas. My motivation comes from my enjoyment of painting, of exploring colors and from the contact I derive from the sensibility of art.

"My aim is to transmit my country's legendary customs, the luminosity and happiness of color, and my affinity with geometry.

"Tadeo Zavaleta has understood my passion for art, and he has helped me develop my style and guide my formation as an artist.

"Some time ago, walking through a market, I witnessed the ill-treatment of a woman from the countryside, by a woman from the city. That's when I decided I had to do something about it, and concluded that the best way was to make people change their attitude towards the people from the Andes and to respect them. I realized change can come about by making the world see the transcendence of the Andean culture. I want people to understand the traditions of the people living in the coast, jungle and highlands – from the Chiclayo barges to the designs of the people dwelling in the jungle. It's a type of celestial geometry since they replicate the stars by dotting them on a plain, and connect the dots. They also include the people of the Andes and the color of their skies.

"My challenges are many. On a persona level, I am currently expecting my first child and I am happy to start a family. I finally fell free to paint and I hope to capture the light of Impressionism and combine it with geometry, which I also like so much. I hope one day I become an admired artist.

"I showed my work to the master, Demetrio Saldaña, and he said he liked my work. I was honored to receive a compliment from an artist with over 40 years' experience. That's when I knew for certain that I had made the right decision.

"Each day I put in my best effort into my work for art is a lifestyle. I offer my life through my work."
