'Power of Faith'

Depicted in profile, Buddha is deep in meditation in this beautiful tribute to the power of faith. Applications of gold foil suggest the master's enlightenment, adding their gleam to the radiant background. Yothin Narasak's exquisite portrait is a manifestation of his own belief.

Thailand is a predominantly Buddhist nation, filled with breathtaking ancient temples, pagodas and other architectural wonders constructed to worship the Buddha. In Thailand images of the Buddha play an important role beyond mere decoration. They are traditionally placed within the home in special locations, such as shrines or pedestals, to help facilitate everyday religious worship.

Narasak presents the work in a teakwood frame.

"I was born in northern Thailand on January 15, 1977 and five or six years later, my parents divorced. I lived with my mother who worked as a teacher.

"My mother remarried and had two children. Then my father, who still lived alone, took me to stay with him when I was in M.3 [ninth grade]. My father worked as an art teacher and supported me so I could study art, which made me very happy. After high school I hoped to continue studying art in Bangkok's most famous university, but I failed the entrance exam twice.

"So I tried to gain more experience in art by myself. I had a chance to live with a famous Thai artist in Bangkok and worked with him for a while. I think I learned more from him than I could have in the university.

"I came home in 1998 and worked with my friends, painting and organizing art exhibitions. Painting isn't a simple thing. Artists need a high level of concentration and strong intentions to create a work. Some paintings take a long time to finish and you will see this in the details. I love my life and I love to create more and more works of art."
