'Christ of the Earthquakes'

Alberto Torres portrays Jesus on the cross with his mother Mary, Mary Magdalene and Saint John. The Bible tells how at the hour of Christ's death, darkness fell and the earth trembled. A replica of an anonymous 18th century work in the La Paz Cathedral Museum, this beautiful painting also makes reference to an image of "Christ of the Earthquakes" venerated in the Cuzco Cathedral. On May 31, 1650, a quake leveled buildings in Cuzco. In a miraculous occurrence for those times of strict segregation, noblemen and women gathered around the image to pray with slaves, mestizos and native Americans in a demonstration of Christian brotherhood.

Torres embellishes this lovely work with applications of 22k gold leaf, and presents it in a cedar frame with bronze leaf.

Titled "Cristo de los temblores" in Spanish.

Alberto Torres

Alberto Torres Merino discovered his love for art at a very early age. He was always interested in books that demonstrated different techniques of drawing and painting and, as time went on, he perfected his own technique and developed a personal style. Says Torres, "I consider myself a self-taught artist, and I use my artistic language to try to reach the heart of everyone."

He works mainly in oils and wood-carving, embellished with gold and bronze leaf.

As an artist, Torres is excited to be able to show his work to many more people, hoping to communicate his deepest feelings through his art.
