"My name is Wayan Anita but I prefer people call me 'Yanik,' a simple and short name to remember. I was born in 1972 at Ubud, Bali province, where painting is part of our daily life. I did traditional style paintings from the time I was a child until I entered college (BPLP/STP Nusa Dua) to study tourism. My motorbike accident, though negative, led me back to art and I have been painting in many styles ever since.
"I have had many artistic influences and experiences but the following are my most significant:
1994: During my month long stay in Australia, I had the opportunity to visit some museums. The artistic works of the Aborigines profoundly inspired me.
1996: I worked at Saritaksu Design and communications for about 1.5 years as a Graphic designer. My co-workers, both local and foreign, were able to teach me many techniques and design principles during this period.
1997: While touring and exhibiting in Switzerland for 3 months, my understanding of modern art was greatly expanded. I exhibited in local banks, galleries, restaurants, and apartments on some days, and visited galleries and museums on others. I also gave painting demonstrations in the streets and parks.
1996-2000: I took part in some exhibitions in Bali at Pranoto Gallery, Ubud at Bali Padma hotel, Legian at (Bursa Seni) REI office, Denpasar exhibition of Borneo, and Aboriginal collaboration at Barong art studio.
"Ethnic Kalimantan and Aboriginal art inspired my current painting. Occasionally I also create illustrations for books, cards, T-shirts, and other print media."
