A. Werneck

"I was born in Rio de Janeiro in 1957. When I was ten, my father took me to visit a local arts and crafts fair. It was love at first sight. I simply could not resist when I saw my first sculptures. I was really charmed by it all. From that time, I began to attend the fair every week with my father, and with the artists I learned the entire process of creating a work. By the time I was 15, I already had my small space there selling my first wood sculptures and some carvings. The artisans were impressed with my determination and will to create, and they always gave me helpful hints and encouragement. Thus began my journey on the sinuous roads of artistic creation where I have traveled now for more than 25 years.

"I was a professor in the Brazilian Society of Fine Arts for two years, but my passion is without a doubt the creative process, respecting and preserving the environment. For more than 20 years, I have coordinated various activities that seek to extract raw materials for my sculptures without harming fragile forests and animal habitats. I organize ecological walks in the forest, in marshlands and in kayaks on ponds.

"Another artistic pleasure that I had was being one of the main float makers for Carnival, working on their design and decoration. This is the largest popular manifestation of my parents' culture. Now, through my participation with Novica, I intend to show my works to the entire world."
