Born in September, 1979, Emmanuel Cecil Brandt spent his childhood days traveling widely before returning to settle down in his home city. He first learned the art of painting as a hobby. He graduated from the art school at a very tender age, moved by a desire to become a graphic designer. After ten years of designing, he suddenly switched to painting abstract and expressionist watercolor paintings.
"Initially, it proved difficult for me to practice my artistic skills on canvas, but I soon developed a keen interest in the arts. They had become an indispensable part of my life. My father's encouragement really gave me the strength to move forward. He used to say to me, 'Son, you've got a gift from God; do not get rid of it but rather improve upon it.' Each painting urges me on to paint another and another and another – each painting is always imbued with the best in me. My work reflects mostly what I witness and experience in my immediate environment."
Brandt started painting full time in 1990. His paintings are endowed with such clarity that at a glance, they seem to speak for themselves. There is, however, much more to his compositions than meets the eye of the casual observer. His paintings are a symphony of colors. Most thrilling is his approach to the African environment which he expresses through different media, such as oil and acrylic on canvas, watercolor, gouache and India ink.
Brandt now also teaches his art. His work can be seen in a galleries and some of his paintings now form part of several private collections.
