'July in Lanna' (2007)

Srijai Kuntawang celebrates the year's most important events with a series of remarkable woodcut prints. For July he replicates the sculpture of Buddha sitting in Ho Trai Library, where Buddhist books and manuscripts are kept. 'July in Lanna' (2007)

Srijai Kuntawang celebrates the year's most important events with a series of remarkable woodcut prints. For July he replicates the sculpture of Buddha sitting in Ho Trai Library, where Buddhist books and manuscripts are kept. The artist uses this image to represent Khao Phansa, the Buddhist Lent, beginning in July. It refers to a period of three lunar months during the rainy season. Monks are required to remain in one particular place or a wat (temple). Khao Phansa Day is the first day after the full moon of the eighth lunar month, and it represents a time of renewed spiritual vigor. Kuntawang's unique sense of artistry is evident in the highly detailed quality of this woodcut print on Fabriano paper.

Srijai Kuntawang

"My name is Srijai Kuntawang, born December 29, 1961 in Thailand's Lumpoon Province. I am married and I have a son who I love very much. I graduated with a Diploma in Fine Arts and a B.Ed. in Graphic Arts, both from Rajamangala Institute of Technology, where I now teach.

"I am enamored with Art. I feel so very happy every time I am creating a composition. My favorite themes come from all that surrounds me, such as nature, culture, and even my family. Most of my works are about local cultural art.

"I live my life doing everything I love, and I practice more and more the get better. The most challenging thing I have had to face in my life is to study hard to graduate, and try my best to be accepted in society. What impresses me the most is the realization that people collect my art work.

"I am proud of my woodcut prints, which I create from my heart. My plans for the future include constantly refining my skills to continue making good art work, and if possible, I would love to have my own art gallery and teach art to those children and adults interested in it.

"I have exhibited my work, individually as well as in collectively, throughout Thailand, Japan, and Bulgaria."
