'Washing of Bonfim' (2007)

Second to Carnival, washing the steps of this church is the most important celebration of Bahia. 'Washing of Bonfim' (2007)

Second to Carnival, washing the steps of this church is the most important celebration of Bahia. Thousands of people gather on Mondays and Thursdays in January at 10 a.m. for the eight-kilometer walk to the church of Bonfim. The procession, repeated each year since 1754, is led by women in full skirts and turbans, followed by the Sons of Gandhi and multitudes of the faithful. When they arrive at the church, singing hymns, they sprinkle the steps with scented water. Dera paints a beautiful representation of this ritual in warm color.

"I was born in Salvador da Bahia. For most of my life, I lived in Sao Paolo, and moved to Rio de Janeiro in 1994. I've also spent time living in Argentina, France and the United States.

"I am interested in art history and have taken a number of courses as well as visiting many museums. I studied with some renowned Brazilian masters, and my tendency in art is contemporary and cubist. I've also exhibited my work.

"My interpretation of cubism astutely transforms the shapes of the real world into a personal vision of colors and angles, creating beauty and art with themes that usually approach social subjects, such as the excluded, or sometimes just trivia like objects and flowers.

"I seek a formal elegance when constructing a true painting where a personal mark is defined as something that is mine in the conquest for perfection. My origins are always present in may paintings. I represent the bahianas that are a part of my culture, depicting them with a lot of love and pleasure."
