'Man Looking at the Sky'

"Blue skies bring the promise of hope for a better future, while lines and details mark paths of love, truth, peace and unity," explains Peruvian Cadillo. Working with acrylics for color and cotton threads for texture, he acknowledges that his inspiration comes from the works of Spanish artist Miró.

"My name is Cecilia Rocio Cadillo Chauca, and I was born February 9, 1980. My dad used to work as an accountant in a bank, but now he is dedicated to agriculture. When I first went to university I enrolled in philosophy, but only lasted a term since really what I've always wanted to do, ever since I was a little girl, is to paint. My relatives say art is in my blood, that it's something I inherited from great-grandfather.

"I still recall the squiggles and drawings I made on the walls of my parents house when I was a little girl. It seems like they are still there somehow. I made my first 'proper' painting when I was eight years old. It was the picture of a girl with her head in the clouds, and from that moment on all I painted were faces. During classes, I'd always be sketching or drawing while teachers lectured.

"When I was in high school one of my teachers told me I had very good skills for painting and suggested I enrolled in the school of Fine Arts, but I didn't know what it was, or what the life of the artist would be like. Though at first I enrolled in philosophy, her words kept ringing in my ears as I realized that what I truly wanted to do was to paint. When I was admitted into the painting faculty, I was so excited! I felt ready to follow the path that had been waiting for me, and which I now follow.

"Mine is a fascinating type of work. I've been doing it ever since I can remember, from the first time I held a brush in my hands. I am motivated by my emotions, which I try to express with every canvas. That's how people can get to know me.

"My other passion is to go to Huaraz, and lie down on the grass at nightfall to watch the stars. Living in a city, it's very difficult to be able to see blue skies. So I look forward to the occasions when I can go to the countryside and enjoy these moments.

"I have exhibiting my work in Lima, including at Lima's Fine Arts Cultural Center.

"One of the greatest challenges I have had to overcome is to convince my parents that art is truly what is right for me to do in my life.

"A painting, in and of itself, uses a language that is unique to its creator. Each canvas offers me the opportunity to express how I feel and what I think. It is an alternative and a solution that I dedicate to you – gracias!"
