A faceless male figure seems lost amid the objects surrounding him. Permeated by light, this work by Alka Jhamb encloses much symbolism. "Here I want to portray the state of human beings in this materialistic world," she says. "The abstract patterns in the foreground represent materialism. Each one of us searches for ourselves in this world."

"Hello. My name is Alka Jhamb and I was born in September 1961. Through college, I studied in convent schools. As a child I was very good at academics and often got good grades. I was also very keen on art and, more often than not, I would find myself indulging in this mesmerizing world.

"I use to participate in art exhibitions while in school, including the famous Shanker's art competition, and also won. However, I was not able to realize my passion for art. Nobody objected to my desire to paint, but somehow it was lost within me. I got married in 1983. A year later, I took Montessori training. Then I held a string of jobs but they didn't satisfy me. Finally, I let my heart decide what it wanted. And my heart chose painting, my first love.

"My calling began in 1998 when I entered art school. I suddenly felt complete and thus my journey into the world of art began. I trained under the guidance of Rameswar Broota. He is truly a master in all senses. He brings out the talent within you so each one develops his or her own style. In 2004, I won the All India Fine Art Council (AIFAC) award.

"Today, painting has made me a satisfied person. I love anything and everything to do with colors. I enjoy experimenting, but my favorite style is figurative. I've been painting for six years now and I couldn't be happier. My husband and my children have been very supportive. My youngest daughter is my greatest critic and I welcome her genuine opinion. It's been smooth sailing so far, but I know I have a long way to go before I quit. In fact I'd love to paint until the end of my life."
