Born April 27, 1977, Eric Nii Addy graduated from the university with a degree in art. During his college years, between 1996 and 1998, he undertook courses in sculpting at the Applied Arts Workshop. He trained as a sculptor under the master George Annan. His name, Nii, means "Chief."
According to his mother, Nii Addy displayed great artistic gifts at a very young age. It happened like this. He once saw a piglet and asked his mama what it was. When she told him that it was a pig's kid, he drew it with a piece of chalk on a bench. His rendition, though transient, was so fascinating that his parents had to call others to come and witness for themselves what their little boy child had accomplished. They all agreed that he was a prodigy.
Offei Darko, Creative Director of a firm in the city, speaks about Nii Addy. "Young, gentle, and calm looking, but Eric Nii Addy Jr. is a talented, powerful, and mystical artist. This can be seen his paintings, sculpture, and illustrations."
The bold and gracious figures in his works portray his academic and natural excellence. There was no doubt when he was judged the best student of his time, and his watercolors are second to none. Although he usually depicts Ghanaian women in their cultural settings and regional African beach scenes, he always bestows uniqueness upon his works, such as the forgotten views of our beaches, the attractive poses of our market women, and his expressionist paintings that provide a window onto another world altogether.
He works in oils, acrylics, and formulated colors. His works are very dramatic, pure, and true to himself - exploding with energy and seeking intensity in the events of yesterday, today, and the future. To Nii Addy, the end justifies the medium, based on spiritual expressions with a drive that is emotional - an expression of "inner necessity."
