"Hello, I'm Rafael Gaya. From the time I was a child I was attracted to drawing and art. Over the years I developed my skills in different media. By the 1980s, my interest in painting had grown but my parents insisted that I study for a professional degree. I was admitted to the university's School of Architecture, as it was related with my creative desire to carry out projects with the abilities I'd acquired over time.
"Shortly after that, my life took an 180-degree turn. Surgery for a tumor on my spine left me paralyzed. I spent a lot of time thinking about life and how important it is to do what we really want. And I decided to spend all my time doing what I love – painting.
"In 1990, I began a formal study of fine arts. I found pop art fascinating, as it is a way to take art into all social and cultural areas.
"In 1997 I participated in an art contest whose theme was contemporary dance. The prestigious painters José Luis Cuevas and Alberto Beltrán were on the jury and I won first prize. A year later, I participated in a tribute to bullfighter Eloy Cavazos in Monterrey.
"Without abandoning my contemporary style, my work took me more toward pop art, and I created a series of oil paintings I called "Pop Mart." I exhibited it all over Mexico. Both the critics and the public liked it very much. As a result, I was asked to participate in an international exhibit in Barcelona as guest artist. It was named "New Tendencies."
"I consider myself a man in love with painting, a medium I use to transmit moments of reflection, love and passion."
