A woman from the Waura tribe performs a ritual dance wearing nothing but the accessories that distinguish her community. It is believed the Waura people settled on the north banks of the Xingu River, most likely to escape European newcomers. Other tribal communities settled along the river and together they are thus regarded under the generic "Xingu Tribes." Members of the different tribes may speak each other's languages and share similar belief systems; they are all dedicated to farming and fishing. Alves paints the woman's portrait with remarkable realism as he honors Amazonian cultures through his art.
