Holding her child with one arm, this Yanomani woman carries bananas on her head with a strap over her head. Alves achieves a vivid portrait as his brushwork masterfully conveys the expression on her face and details the traditional coiffure and body paint. Living on the border between Brazil and Venezuela, the Yanomani people have a great respect for nature and are devoted to their shamans. However, due to urban invasion and epidemics, the Yanomani population has dwindled, affecting also the number of shamans. According to their beliefs, if all shamans were to die, it would mean the end of the world.

Alves is a self-taught artist from Marajá Island, son of a family dedicated to fishing. Alves started to paint his own works of art in 1987, when he was only 15 years old. The work of Alves portrays the indigenous universe of the remaining Brazilian tribes.

Marajá Island is situated in the state of Pará, one of the largest in Brazil. Located in northern Brazil, it is crossed by the equator and totally submersed in the Amazon forest. It is considered the gateway to the Amazons. Pará is rich in natural resources, fauna and exuberant flora.

Pará is renowned for its unique cultural heritage, which blends tribal and Portuguese influences. The folklore, cuisine and handcrafts of Pará are strongly influenced by tribal customs.
