'The Protectors' (2003)

Ornate umbrellas cluster close, forming an almost impenetrable roof above unseen people who carry them. This beautiful work by Herry Patrianto is an allegory. "Umbrellas can protect us from the rain and sun. In this painting, they symbolize God. The deep red-orange represents courage. White stands for purity and black symbolizes power," the artist explains. "God will always protect people who have the courage to do anything right."

Born in 1956 in Muntilan, Central Java, Herry Patrianto is a brilliant, renowned artist. He has exhibited widely throughout Indonesia, and is the recipient of prestigious regional awards. A graduate of the SSRI (School of Art), Patrianto has also worked as an art designer with TVRI (Televisi Republik Indonesia) since 1978.

Herry Patriano infuses ancient Indonesian motifs into his stylized paintings, resulting in a rich and sophisticated blend of traditional beauty and modern sensibility.

The artist notes that he currently finds considerable joy in mentoring his daughter, Kristy – a budding young artist.
