'St Michael Archangel' (2007)

Michael, the first Angel created by God, is the leader of all archangels and is in charge of protection, strength, truth and integrity. His name means "Who is like God?" and his chief function is to rid Earth of the toxins associated with fear. Michael conquered the fallen Angel Satan and thus is portrayed with a flaming sword said to protect from evil and negativity. Denise Araripe paints a powerful portrait of the heroic archangel, who she surrounds with verses of the Lord's Prayer, the Pater Nostrum, written in Latin. The artist separates the prayer into seven paragraphs as she associates them with a different chakra and saint: the first chakra, white, with the Holy Spirit; the second chakra, purple, with Michael Archangel; third chakra, blue, with Our Lady of Peace; fourth chakra, green, with Jesus Christ; fifth chakra, yellow, with Judas Thaddeus; sixth chakra, orange, with Mary's Sacred heart; and the seventh chakra with a Madonna.

Araripe's original composition is painted with oils and acrylics featuring 18k gold leaf applications, as well as bronze and copper. On the right she writes "From words I make a sword and the power of my fortune." She also makes reference to a work from antique Greece warning of the consequences of speaking of evil, and next to this she repeats a sentence from the Lord's Prayer (in Latin): "Lead us not into temptation and deliver us from evil." The painting is enriched with a collage of nickel-plated brass pins, cotton yarn and paper motifs.

"I'm Denise from Rio de Janeiro, and I have a BA in Art Education. I've always loved art and have been painting since I was 15 years old. I lived abroad for many years, in London and Geneva, where I took several courses in art and painting. When I returned to Brazil I began to paint professionally.

"Discussing art is very difficult. These days several artists, me included, question the role of art. To me, art is now part of everyday living despite the fact that an artist claims to depart from it, because an artist paints based on observations on life. It is a very personal process. I also make sculptures.

"I'm interested in creating collages of images that represent different eras, that have several meanings, and that become transformed into pop icons that are somewhat kitsch.

"My 'Saints' series is an example of pop iconography. I replicate images of saints that were originally painted in the 1400's, but my version features modern icons. I began this series in 2003, when I was commissioned to paint 'The Conception' for the entrance to the Casa Cor exhibit, which is a yearly event. I decided to depict Michael Archangel through my pop style. It was a work that implied extensive research, and it was viewed with great success. From then on I began to portray other saints through modern-day symbols.

"I hope Novica clients appreciate my artistic interpretations."
