Andy Dewantoro

"I am Andy Dewantoro, born in December 1974 in Tanjung Karang. Painting has been one of my hobbies since I was a young boy. As other children did, I selected mostly themes like landscapes and houses. When I was in secondary school, I stopped painting for a fairly long time because my mother died.

"In 1995, I was able to become a student in a university I'd been dreaming of since I was in elementary school. Focusing on interior design as my major, I even left my painting hobby.

"After graduating in 2000, I worked with several interior design consultants and in 2002, with friends, we established our own interior design consultancy. Empty space on a restaurant wall that we were decorating challenged me to begin painting once more. My friends and I thought abstract canvases would go nicely in that interior, so I painted one. My career in interior design has led me to see painting as the soul of spaces. The combinations of dramatic and passionate color give harmony to my paintings. Why choose an abstract style? Through this style I can freely express my ideas, which are mostly inspired by my own life, like my childhood, happy and sad moments I shared with friends, and my marriage."

Dewantoro has exhibited his work throughout Indonesia, taking second place in a painting competition in 1990. He won first prize in the Poster Design Competition in 1993.
