"In my late 40s, I came across the Warli folk art of Maharashtra. This art form inspired me immensely. I instantly fell in love with it."
"I come from Mumbai, the city of dreams, as they called it. I have been an ardent lover of art ever since I was young. I have to say, my father has been my greatest source of inspiration. He was a great art lover himself. He was a music composer and also had an inclination toward painting.
"After graduation, I followed my interest and went to school to learn commercial art. Later, I pursued a diploma in teaching art and taught in the Indian Education Society for a period of six years. After that, I ventured into textile design, which I practiced for ten years along with my career as a playback singer.
"In my late 40s, I came across the Warli folk art of Maharashtra. This art form inspired me immensely. I instantly fell in love with the simplicity in their depiction of nature and their daily life. As I further learned about the tribe, I was greatly impressed by their easygoing and rational lifestyle. I started Warli painting as hobby and now it has developed into a profession.
"Life hasn't been easy for me and I have raised two children as a single parent. However, most importantly for me is that I have been able to develop a very close and friendly relationship with my children, and our bond has helped us overcome our financial troubles and other obstacles together. We have a very healthy family life. Both my children assist me with the basic work but I do the actual painting alone.
"I would like to hold exhibitions of my paintings worldwide, devote more time to other styles of painting and one day have my own workshop. Along with art, I would also like to focus on writing and publishing books. It has always been my dream to promote this beautiful traditional Warli art globally and I am so glad to be able to do so through Novica. I hope you appreciate my work."
Lalita Oraskar's paintings have been exhibited in several group shows in Mumbai art galleries and also in government-sponsored exhibitions.
