Hola! My name is Carmen Eguía and I was born in northern Mexico. My childhood was spent surrounded by the love of my parents, brothers and sisters and by the tranquility of a quiet home in the country. Because there were 12 children in the family, my mother transformed the yard into a garden where she raised fruits and vegetables for the table. But at the edge of the garden was a plot filled with flowers that she'd cut every day to decorate our home with their cheer.
"Our house was outside the city, and we spent most of our time there. On Sundays, our parents would take us to churches where my grandmother exhibited scenes from the Bible that the priests asked her to paint. I was always fascinated by drawing and design. Many of my childhood afternoons were spent extracting the colors from petals, leaves, fruits and vegetables from our garden. I'd use them to paint landscapes that filled the house and my life with happiness.
"Eventually, we moved farther south and that's when I decided to learn to paint. I studied at the Centro Cultural El Refugio, and painting permitted me to recover the beauty of the memories I'd hidden away for so long, always latent in my heart.
"My hand and paintbrush have become an extension of my heart that flutters happily across a piece of paper, depicting in colors my feelings and memories."
