'Buddhist Pilgrimage'

Three Buddhist monks walk in single file as they embark on a tudong pilgrimage. They bring with them the bare essentials, their saffron robe, their umbrella, and their alms bowl. They seem to walk on air as Warawud Aodkron depicts them approaching a mystical tree atop a green hill. This practice is known as dhutanga, which literally means, "The stripping away of defilements." They seem to walk on air as Warawud Aodkron depicts them approaching a mystical tree atop a green hill. This practice is known as dhutanga, which literally means, "The stripping away of defilements." It implies letting go of material and unnecessary things as well as leaving behind one's comfort zones, and thus live in insecurity, confronted by difficult situations.

Warawud Aodkron

"I'm 'Dan,' or Warawud Aodkron, and I was born in 1979 in northern Thailand. My parents have two children, my sister and me. I remember I always loved art and color. In 1995 when I was about 15 years old, I decided to leave my hometown to study art in the city.

"I returned to my home town to help my father with his fish farm. After a year, I realized that if I stayed there I'd have no way to change my life and use my art knowledge. Moreover, it is just a small agricultural town, not appropriate to anything else.

"I decided to return to the city to continue my art work. I thought I'd have more career choices and the chance to be artist. At first, I worked at a hotel, then I took a number of jobs like sign painting and selling building supplies.

"Finally, in 2002, my dreams came true. I started to paint on the recommendation of a friend. After about five years without painting I sold a canvas at an excellent price. That made me feel proud and renewed my confidence in art. I quit my job and just painted and sold my work.

"My next goal is to become one of the most famous artists in Thailand. But I'm in no hurry. I will walk step by step until I can reach that point because right now I'm still very young. I have a lot of time to gain more experience and I've also started to paint intentionally.

"I use my spirit and my feeling in my work – that's what I mean about intention. If you can reach my meanings, you will feel my feelings through my work. And for anyone who purchases my work, you also gain my art spirit.

"Although I've just started to paint, I have the strong intention to create. Thank you to everyone who can see the value of my art."
