'Rio of My Loves' (2006)

Iraceia Guerra selects an unusual perspective for this portrait of Rio de Janeiro. Depicting the high rises that line the shore, she evokes an aerial photograph. Verdant urban parks and the ever present ocean make this a composition of cool colors.

Titled "Rio dos Meus Amores" in Portuguese.

"When I became interested in art I started with the figurative. Later I chose an abstract path using collages and researching materials. For 17 years I dedicated myself to experimentation with paper. I used diverse techniques, such as engraving, the creation of artisanal paper, watercolors, gouache, and oils, among others. In 1995 I started painting on canvas once again, applying all of the knowledge I acquired through learning techniques on paper.

"From that moment on I felt the desire to once again do works with figurative themes. I was recreating everything from my childhood universe without realizing it in a new and free form, without worrying about norms and rules. My themes reminded me of the fantasies of youth, the games, the neighborhood that fascinated me, the little boats, and the people. My childhood universe reemerged from ashes right before my surprised eyes.

"The search for materials and collages was utilized and applied in this style of naïf painting, creating a rather particular expression. I use various techniques and supports in my painting. My work is always experimental and I am always seeking new materials, principally for abstract themes."

Iraceia has exhibited throughout Brazil as well as in Spain and United States.
