"I define my style as primitive. I like to paint scenes that remind me of my birthplace, Ceará - a northeastern Brazilian state with rows of houses and small cities and, most importantly, children playing. Unfortunately, when I was young I didn't have time to play, because I would be helping my father bottling the wine he produced. Still, I'm a very playful person and I love jokes.
"I started painting when I was a child, and I like to write too. My two brothers are artists and one of them, Gerardo de Sousa, encouraged me to pursue painting and design. I started selling my work in 1984, at the Ipanema fair and at the sealed-off streets of Copacabana in Rio de Janeiro. My brothers have always guided me, I used to observe them at work but I consider myself to be a self-taught artist since I didn't have any formal instruction.
"A few years ago I ended up leaving painting aside due to the necessities of life, and I paint as a parallel activity to work. It's a shame because I already had set clients that always used to buy my paintings. Now I work at a metallurgy company.
"I believe that exhibiting my paintings through Novica will bring a renewal of my career in painting. It's an opportunity for me to explore the core of something that has always brought me great satisfaction. It gives me pleasure to know that people around the world will see my work. That by itself makes me happy."
