'Protect' (2005)

Working in the style of classic Buddhist art, Poovadol depicts a deva, or angel who assumes a protective gesture. He stands at the door of the temple above a demon, who appears disconcerted. 'Protect' (2005)

Working in the style of classic Buddhist art, Poovadol depicts a deva, or angel who assumes a protective gesture. He stands at the door of the temple above a demon, who appears disconcerted. Tradition and belief invoke devas for protection from evil and to keep bad things from entering the place of worship.

Thailand is a predominantly Buddhist nation, filled with breathtaking ancient temples, pagodas and other architectural wonders constructed to worship Buddha. In Thailand, images of Buddha play an important role beyond mere decoration. They are traditionally placed within the home in special locations, such as shrines or pedestals, to help facilitate everyday religious worship.

"My name is Poovadol Srikaew, and my nickname is 'Jib.' I was born September 9, 1975 to a family of five – my older sister, my younger brother, mother, father and me. I studied primary school and junior high near our hometown and for three years in a vocational school in the provincial capital. Then I went to Bangkok for a bachelor's degree because of my interest and love for art. Our hometown is a popular tourist destination, and foreign tourists are interested in Thai art. Also, my vocational school teachers are specialists in Thai art motifs. By the time I finished my BA, I'd know Thai art quite well.

"After graduating, I worked for a year in Bangkok, painting traditional motifs on Thai silk. I finished the required year as a soldier then went to help my uncle in his signboard and stationery shop for a year. I returned to Bangkok and took a job designing restaurant menus, but I was homesick all the time. So after six months, I went back home.

"All through my childhood, I went to the temple everyday to take food offerings and stayed a long time to copy the wall paintings. I only attended the festivals a few times because I don't like crowds. In this one life, I will do everything well today and better tomorrow.

"My work is to tell about our lifestyle through Thai art and literature. Much of our identity comes from the old days, and our art has a tradition of thousands of years. It has a lot of meaning for all Thai people and for me too. I'm grateful that Novica is a window for people in the whole world to see, know and love Thai art."
