'The Lover'

Courtship rituals in the olden days of Lanna inspire the art of Sunti. He portrays a woman and a man walking together under a great parasol. The artist paints with expressive detail, taking care to depict every nuance of their robes as well as of the man's tattoos. Believed to ward off evil and bad luck, especially during times of war. Only the abbot was allowed to tattoo a person, for it was considered to be magical. Traditional images included a snake or a tiger, as well as Lanna writing characters. Sunti paints with sublime detail as he works with acrylics and 24k gold leaf.

"My name is Sunti Junnongsrung, and I'm an Arts graduate from Rajamangala Institute of Technology. I used to work as a teacher's assistant there too, and I enjoyed teaching others about art and painting, but since I graduated I've been working on my own. I prefer to paint at home. I don't like painting in a square room surrounded by others, its too distracting. At home I feel more relaxed and in the mood to paint.

"Born in northern Thailand on February 13, 1963, I am now married but have no children yet. I have one younger brother, and he is interested in art as much as I am, so we constantly help and advice each other.

"I've been painting for over 20 years but I've never been able to exhibit my work – it sells too fast for me to put a collection together. My friends keep asking me to join at least a collective exhibition, but I have still been too busy to do it. I hope someday soon I will find the time and keep enough canvases for one.

"There has been such great demand for my work, that I have now customers living abroad, including restaurants and hotels. My goal is to share with the rest of the world the beauty of classic Thai art and our traditions.

"Other than to paint, I also like to go to the temple on festive Buddhist days, or when I have some free time. The temple murals are always so nice and interesting, that they have inspired me to paint about the people, culture and traditional art of northern Thailand. It's like having my own temple mural at home.

"I believe in what I do and what I do best is to paint, which happens to be what I love to do! I lead a simple and peaceful life. I'm not bothered by earning large amounts of money. I just would like to have enough money to live comfortably.

"It makes me feel very proud when a person buys one of my paintings. Money is a thing of value, so to me, if somebody uses their money to buy something it means they have given it some value. If people use their money to buy my paintings, to me it means they consider them to be valuable.

"I want to thank you Novica for being interested in my paintings and for helping me promote my work worldwide. Us Thai people, we always help each other, I believe in this principle, and it is exactly what Novica is doing for our country. Please continue doing good by Thailand! And I would like to thank customers too, because you inspire me to keep on painting."
