'Butterfly'

Looming large against the dark background, a butterfly dominates this handsome composition. At the top, people come and go, oblivious to the velvet wings that flutter nearby. "Just as humans toil in life for a better living, the butterflies fly tirelessly in search of food and shelter," says Indian artist Sudesh Kumar.

The work is presented with a mat board passe partout.

Sudesh Kumar

"Hello, my name is Sudesh Kumar and I was born and brought up in Delhi. Ever since I was a child, I was quite imaginative and often created my own world of fantasy. After high school, I studied for a Bachelor of Arts degree in Hindi literature. While studying literature, I was fascinated by the stories and poems of great writers and poets, some of whom were even Freedom Fighters. I wanted to portray what I learned in the form of paintings. So after graduation, I studied for a Bachelor of Fine Arts in painting. Among the people who have inspired me to a great extent is Dr. Jai Shankar Prasad, a poet par excellence. I find most of his poems related to art and also related to the contemporary world.

"My journey into the realm of art has been well worth traveling, from basics to the smallest details. From abstracts to realistic works, I have created my own world of art. My favorite, though, is realistic painting. I wanted to portray my thoughts and emotions in my paintings. I am also interested in abstracts and did some good work in this style.

"During my final year in the university, I did some etchings as a part of the curriculum. They were coming out perfectly and the style suited my ideas. I did some works in this style also, and got much appreciation from friends and well-wishers. I have done a series of paintings on 'Sound' – something that cannot be seen or touched but can be felt. A great philosopher once said, 'Sound is the first cosmic power.' When everything ceases to exist, sound remains. It is present everywhere. Sound creates imagined images and this is what I try to express in my painting.

"I have participated in several exhibitions and was also awarded the Youth Competition Award for my etching titled 'Celebration of Death.'
