'Akha Life'

"I was inspired by the Akha hill tribe people. They have their own identities and traditions, which I wanted to represent through my artistic work and personal choice of colors," confides Thai artist Oraphat. She prepares a palette of acrylic paints in soft hues to capture the charm and naiveté of Akha children.

The Akha community lives in Thailand's northern hills. They wear blue-black clothes adorned with glistening appliqué that includes silver coins, beads, seeds and feathers. In this community, the women are dedicated to sewing and embroidery, while the men weave baskets and craft musical instruments and crossbows.

Oraphat

"My name is Oraphat Phuruangraengphol and I was born on 9 November 1972 in Chachoengsao. I moved to Bangkok when 13 years old, where I graduated with a Bachelor's degree, majoring in arts communication. I moved again, this time to Chiang Mai and I love it up here. It is a nice area, with a strong cultural and traditional identity.

"I am a joyful person. I like reading, photography, traveling, searching for new knowledge. I am happy to be able to do the things I love, especially creating artworks.

"I believe in Buddhism and adhere to the Thai culture. I like to go to temples and ancient places, and I do merit by giving food alms to Buddhist monks.

"My works and my choice of colors express my imagination and my feelings. Hill tribe kids have their own identity, which I find greatly interesting. That is why I decided to represent them and their identity through my own style and colors. However, I will continue creating what impresses me, developing and improving my style and varying the themes and subjects as time passes."
