'Canang Sari Offering'

Depicted by A. A. Darmayuda, sticks of incense smolder against a sky blue background. In the center is a colorful canang sari, comprised of a coconut leaf basket, fresh flowers and shredded pandanus leaves. These offerings are given to the gods as a token of praise and prayer. In Bali, they represent Siwa (Shiva), while the incense represents Brahma and holy water, Wisnu (Vishnu).

"My name is A.A. Darmayuda, and I was born in Singapadu, Bali in 1977. I have studied painting since high school and continued into college. Most of the people in my village are woodcarvers, especially carving the storyboards popularly called panil. However, painting is my creative concern.

"Humanity has vast and multiple dimensions that involve social and economic life. People always move, and they experience various stories of behavior and policy. All of the drama of life in my mind is the dynamism of the people I would like to depict in my paintings.

"I often display my work at exhibitions throughout Bali and Java. I have a collection of paintings that usually focus around the grim political and social situations of my country. I am inspired by helping to develop awareness of the plight of the underclass and common laborer. A personal explanation is included with each of my paintings.

"Art comes from the heart while worldly concerns are for the head and hands. Be pure in heart, and then you can grasp the beauty of art."
