'Coming to Harvest'

The early morning sun announces the arrival of the harvest season by tingeing the leaves of the cassava plant a bright yellow. Three women walk amid the tall trees balancing baskets on their heads. "Their husbands planted them, and it is their turn to collect and sell them to provide for their family," explains Komla Lowe as he paints this acrylic on canvas. "Women in Africa are really hard-working. They play a major role in providing for their family."...

"I was born on January, 7, 1973. In college, I had a part time job as a gallery assistant with the National Theatre Art Gallery where I witnessed several important exhibitions that inspired me, including Bertimeus Prize Competition, the Four Best Watercolorists, and The Kiddafest Toy Exhibition.

"Even from a very young age I've always enjoyed drawing – which I would do on any flat surface. After secondary school, I realized that art was what I wanted to do. During my time at the National Theatre and in college, I studied with one of the very best artists in Ghana, Mr. Kofi Nduro.

"My inspiration comes from God, because on him I depend and with him I do all things. I attain the artistic goals I set to the highest degree through God. I love to portray the beauty of women. I also like to express my feelings on how women are treated in general. And sometimes I also depict social and political issues.

"I exhibited in 1999 on the theme 'Nature and Time.' I also exhibited in Togo in 2001 alongside different Togolese artists. I exhibited at the National Art Centre in 2000 on the theme, 'The Unknown Artist.' I mostly use acrylic, oil, canvas and card as a medium."
