'Akuaba Doll II'

Four Akuaba dolls stand as emblems of Ashanti beliefs and traditions on this acrylic on canvas. "I painted them this way to capture the essence of the Akuaba or fertility doll," explains Frank Nortei Nortey as he marks each doll with a different Adinkra symbol. According to legend a woman named Akua (because she was born on a Wednesday) had been unable to conceive. An elder told her to make a doll and care for it as she would a child. Soon after...

Soon after she conceived and gave birth to a healthy child or ba. Since then, the doll has been regarded as a fertility doll, which the Ashanti refer to as Akuaba, and many women who once were barren have now conceived.

Frank Nortei Nortey

Frank Nortei Nortey is a young but seasoned artist, born January 24th, 1987 in Accra, Ghana.

"After completing my junior secondary school in 1999, I advanced to Ghanatta College of Art from 2000 to 2003. Here I acquired in-depth knowledge of the inventive designs that aided me in becoming what I long treasured and wanted to be since I was a child. As an artist, many times I create what I feel, think and see in the world around me, garnering extraordinary reactions from my admirers. I challenge and stretch myself, never falling back on what I have done in the past.

"Among my favorite collections are watercolors, abstract works, portraits, handicrafts and others. I master today what will be history tomorrow."
