'Washerwomen and their Daughters'

A parade of tradition takes over the canvas as Marina paints of lavadeiras (literally "washerwomen") from Bahia. They stand next to their daughters, who wear the same dress and color. Painting with acrylics, Marina proudly highlights Brazil's African heritage.

Titled "Lavadeiras com suas filhas" in Portuguese.

"Hi, I'm Marina from Bahia. I began to paint in 2005 along with my husband, who is a fine artist. Actually, I've enjoyed painting ever since I was a child, it is only recently that I have devoted more time to it.

"Bahia offers a well of inspiration with its traditional dances and rhythms and its culinary art, the best in the country! I lived in Porto Seguro for some years, a cozy, paradisiacal and happy place.

"Now I live in Rio and I'm inspired by African culture, of which I am a descendant. I try to highlight my roots through my work. I'm also inspired by the favelas on the outskirts of Rio.

"I love to paint, especially because I get to work alongside my husband, who helps me and has also taught me to paint.

"I really love Brazil, I find there are many things to be explored in my country's culture and art.

"I hope you like my work and feel happy when you see it. I hope you like the colors and themes, because I want to show you the good side of carioca favelas and the Afro-Brazilian culture."
