'Migration'

Women fill the foreground, taking the initiative in their migration from Liberia to Ghana. Speaking reassuringly to her son, a young mother demonstrates courage and optimism. Amuda selects a monochrome palette of warm earth tones for this beautiful watercolor. "We should try to maintain peace all the time," he admonishes. "Peace cannot be traded for anything.

Amuda presents the painting in a manila board passe-partout.

"I was born in February of 1981 in Madina, a suburb of Accra, the seventh of ten children. I was good at sketching and painting at a very young age. During my primary education, I was enrolled in an art institution to improve my skill. I later worked with my art master, Mr. Naab Morg Abdallah, for seven years.

"I have different styles of painting, but I'd describe my main style as a semi-detailed abstract and a form of mannerism. My figures are painted in an elongated, elaborate, tense and elegant way in sharp and deliberate contrast to harmonious naturalism. I mainly depict African images and our cultural heritage.

"I started with a traditional watercolor ink that I process myself with a substance we call dunya. I applied this on textured card stock or paper, but now I use acrylic paints and I feel that my paintings have improved.

"I get inspired from the things I see, the stories I write, read or listen to, dreams and imagination. My passion for painting motivates me, but the thought of our vast fading culture motivates me to paint even more in order to create awareness and preserve our heritage.

"My creative palette extends to several visual channels, and I believe education will improve my skill. I aspire to become a cartoonist and one day to establish an art institution. I will use these means to help the physically challenged in my society to explore their talent.

"Some of the challenges I have faced in life so far include the tremendous criticism I faced from some of the religious elite in my community. Also, the aspiration to further my art work came to a halt when my father passed away.

"I participated in a group exhibition at the Ghana National Museum in April, 2006 that was organized by the Royal Art Academy of Sardinia, Italy. I have also displayed my work at other Ghanaian venues.

"The method by which Novica exhibits art works is very effective, as it is a modern tool that reaches an unlimited number of people – around the globe and around the clock. This is good for artists, collectors and art lovers everywhere."
