Sawassdee Krab! My name is Rom Scapinello, but my friends all call me Bank. I was born and raised in Suratthani, one of Thailand's southern provinces. I am the tenth of eleven children. I majored in science and received a bachelor's degree in applied statistics. I chose to study science because my parents really wanted me to but, personally, I love art.
"Because there was not much business for me in southern Thailand, I moved north all alone to look for a job. I began working as an assistant buying agent for an Italian company. There I found my adoptive father and my last name comes from him. He exports Thai arts and crafts to Italy. Through my work, I saw many lovely Thai art forms every day, and this inspired me to explore handicrafts and painting. My adoptive father is also an inspiration. Although he is a foreigner, he loves Thai art and wonders why Thai people like me don't do something to present our art to the world.
"My work focuses on Thai style. I often depict the lotus,
pipal tree and Thai flowers, and I've achieved my own artistic identity.
"Today, I am very satisfied with my life. I do what I love and give it my best effort without distressing anyone. I feel very happy when I can create a new design.
"My greatest challenge is when I meet a client who isn't satisfied, and blames my work. I have no anger toward them, but I thank them to show me how my painting causes different feelings or looks different from person to person. My paintings are art, with no right or wrong. Someone may like or dislike my work but I'm happy and feel so proud when people say they really like my paintings.
"I hope Novica shoppers like my work because I do it all with love. Let's experience Thai art through my paintings."
