'The Cheerful and the Colorful'

"I wanted to express the cheerful emotions that come from color, as well as make them tangible through sandy textures," Benjawan says as she explains her work. She paints with acrylics, mixing a palette of intense shades of blue and green. A fine red line creates a striking contrast, while sand lures with tempting textures.

"My family and friends call me by my nickname, Ae, but my full name is Benjawan Sangngernchai. I was born on August 29, 1967 in Lamphun, and I am the eldest sister. I'm very lucky, because my parents have always understood my passion for art. They never discouraged me. On the contrary, they've always supported my pursuit of a career in the art world. They are so supportive, that they motivate me.

"I studied at the faculty of Fine Arts at Rajamangala University of Technology. Since I've graduated, I have been dedicated to art full time, exploring different fields within the realm of art: painting, sculpting collectible dolls, and designing home décor items. Art is such an intrinsic part of my life. I am happiest when I'm creating, and it makes me feel so relaxed.

"I have exhibited my work throughout Chiang Mai, including the Tham Heet Thoy Hoy Sala Lanna ("Follow the Lanna Artisan") exhibition at the Chiang Mai University Art Museum on three occasions, and the Chom Nah Sillapin ("Artist's Face") exhibit at the Srisom Galleria.

"One of the most challenging projects I have worked on was creating a written map of a "Night Safari," and the project that brought me a deep sense of accomplishment was my group thesis project for the Laluna Gallery, which we sold immediately.

"When I paint, my intention is to evoke a powerful sense of happiness. I focus on what doesn't work until I make it work. I use the powder sand technique with my paintings, and I draw inspiration from the environment that surrounds me. My hope for the future is to participate in a big, national exhibition, and to win an important contest.

"Working in the art world, I feel very enthusiastic about exhibiting my work through a different media such as Internet. I feel very excited about the idea of a person looking at my work from a different part of the world than mine. I think Novica's website offers me the best opportunity to exhibit my work online, because I like the idea that it is in the company of other pieces of arts and crafts from around the world. This makes me very happy, and I welcome you to visit my work on Novica."
